10 Things A Wife Needs From A Husband

We hear a lot these days about what a husband and wife need from each other. It is good to keep in mind that all are fallible humans who are doing the best they can in this fragile institution called marriage. It is only with God entwined in our lives that the three-fold cord of matrimony can truly hold up under the pressures of this world.

That being said, this list is pulled from scripture and not from my own imagination. I believe there could be more things added to the list, but for now, these are ten things a wife needs from her husband.

1.  Loyalty – A wife needs a husband to be loyal. Read the latter part of 1 Cor 7:11 that says,

'Likewise, a husband must not abandon his wife.'

Malachi 2:14 says,

'You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.' A man must be loyal to the wife of his youth. God requires it.

2.  Seeing Her Desirability – There is an entire book of the Bible dedicated to the passionate exploits of love. Proverbs 5:19 says,

'A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.'

If you're thinking intoxicating love is for the young, remember Sarah and Abraham. They obviously were sexually intimate with one another, and they obviously still loved one another. A wife longs to be desired by her husband, otherwise the illustration in this verse would not work. Isaiah 62:5 says,

'Your children will commit themselves to you, O Jerusalem, just as a young man commits himself to his bride. Then God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.

3. Willing to work –  The Bible says in 1 Timothy 5:8,

'But those who won't care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.'

There must be a willingness to provide for your spouse according to the scriptures.

4. Respect – I understand there's been an entire movement around the idea that a husband needs respect -- and he does. What I don't hear mentioned that much is that a wife also needs respect. Proverbs 31:11 says,

'The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.'

If that were not clear enough, the description of the Proverbs 31 woman shows a wife who is dealing in real estate, merchandise, and sales of her own initiative, and whose husband is well taken care of. No hand-wringing in sight. He trusts her.

5. He praises her and knows her worth – A virtuous woman is worth more than rubies, and her husband is not afraid to say it. Proverbs 31:28 says,

'Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:'.

6. Sex –  1 Corinthians 7:3 says,

'The husband should fulfill his wife's sexual needs,'

'Nuff said.

7. Sacrifice – Ephesians 5:25 says,

'Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.'

Jesus's love for His church is sacrificial.

8. He cleanses her --- He sees to her chasteness and purity, and he appreciates the process of her sanctification. The Bible is not a tool to bully others with. Studying together is a good way to spend time, as he is mimicing Jesus's washing of His church with the water of the word. It is also a quality of love to want the best for another and to not rejoice over unrighteousness.

9. Cleanliness – Hebrews 13:4,

'Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.'

Looking at a woman lustfully is a sin as you've already committed adultery with her in your heart.

10. Love  – 'There is no fear in love.' 1 John 4:18.

Ephesians 5:25a says, 'Husbands, love your wives,'

Of love, the Bible says, 'Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.' 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

I believe there are other things in the scriptures that it says a wife needs, like being honored and cherished and having her needs considered as the weaker vessel, but chose to write on these ten today. Again, no marriage is perfect, and no one should use this or any other list to beat someone over the head with.

We are all imperfect people who, by the grace of God, are striving to do this marriage thing through life together. It was instituted for many reasons, one of which is to illustrate the glorious design of the church in relation to Jesus Christ. It is only with Jesus's help that we can mimic His glorious love for us in our frail human flesh.
